Nikka 21 Year Old Taketsuru Pure Malt Japanese Whisky

This is a signature label in honour of Nikka's founder Masataka Taketsuru, the first Japanese who mastered whisky-making in Scotland and brought this expertise back to Japan. While being a disciplined craftsman, he was also a person of curiosity and open-mindedness. This is a tribute to Masataka from his successors, highlighting a perfect balance with complexity achieved by precise blending inherited from the founder.
A "pure malt" is a blend of malt whiskies from various distilleries, whereas a "single malt" is a whisky made exclusively from one distillery. A "pure malt" is also known as a "blended malt".
This 21 Year Old Pure Malt is made from the blending of malts from the two distilleries: Miyagikyo and Yoichi. It was chosen as the World’s Best Blended Malt in 2007, 2009, 2010 and 2011.

Nose:    Firm, lively. A mixture of almond paste, flowers, citrus and salt. It is particularly powerful. It develops with vanilla, new oak, menthol and fresh tobacco notes. Finally, gentian gives a pleasant bitterness.

Taste:    Sweet, balanced, spicy growing in intensity. Praline and nuts calm the harsh flavours. This gives way to ripe fruit, vanilla and exotic fruit. The citrus flavours are full of sweetness.

Finish:    Long, tender. Languishing on freshly cut grass, star anis and green liquorice. The peat is all but a memory. It continues with mocha, acacia honey and green menthol. Its salty character grows in intensity.

Note: Product has come from a private collection, minor markings are inevitable and collectors should have reasonable expectations in this regard.
