Macallan Edition No. 4 Single Malt Whisky

The Macallan was one of the first distillers in Scotland to be legally licensed. Since then, Macallan has built a reputation as one of the world’s leading single malt whiskies. The creation of The Macallan draws on the vital contributing influences of Spain, North America and Scotland - and of their respective natural raw materials, combined with traditional methods and craftsmanship.
The Macallan distillery was founded by Alexander Reid, a barley farmer and school teacher. The original name of the area was “Maghellan”, taken from the Gaelic word “magh”, meaning fertile ground and “Ellan”, from the Monk St.Fillan - who held a close association with the church that stood in the grounds of The Macallan Estate until 1400. Farmers had been making whisky on their Speyside farms in the area for centuries, using their surplus barley during the quieter winter months.

This is the 2018 and fourth annual bottling in the Edition series. Edition No.4 was intended to celebrate the design and craftsmanship involved in the new Macallan distillery which opened that year, and was packaged in green to evoke the turf covered roof of the spectacular new site.
Edition No.4 embodies the craftsmanship and pioneering design of the new Macallan Distillery and demonstrates the mastery of whisky making on the estate since 1824. Crafted from a combination of European and American oak casks, Edition No.4 presents a zesty, vibrant and invigorating single malt of rounded honey, sweet toffee and citrus fruits. This is a distinctive whisky that pushes the boundaries of our innovation, reflecting the passion, traditions and craftsmanship that goes into the art of the perfect cask selection.

Nose:   Bold and rounded honey with a sweet apple note. Orange zest follows a background of ginger and nutmeg. Robust, polished matured oak comes at the end in contrast to the subtle green wood and floral undertones.

Taste:    Nutmeg with wood spices and green cloves open up immediately, with a calm following the intense beginnings, leaving a sweet and vanilla viscous mouth coating.

Finish:    Fruity with oaky sweetness, long and lasting.
