Macallan Edition No. 3 Single Malt Whisky
The Macallan was one of the first distillers in Scotland to be legally licensed. Since then, Macallan has built a reputation as one of the world’s leading single malt whiskies. The creation of The Macallan draws on the vital contributing influences of Spain, North America and Scotland - and of their respective natural raw materials, combined with traditional methods and craftsmanship.
The Macallan distillery was founded by Alexander Reid, a barley farmer and school teacher. The original name of the area was “Maghellan”, taken from the Gaelic word “magh”, meaning fertile ground and “Ellan”, from the Monk St.Fillan - who held a close association with the church that stood in the grounds of The Macallan Estate until 1400. Farmers had been making whisky on their Speyside farms in the area for centuries, using their surplus barley during the quieter winter months.
Released in 2017, this is the third annual bottling in the Edition series, this time a collaboration between Bob Dalgarno and Master Perfumer, Roja Dove.
Edition No. 3 brings to life the flavour experience of The Macallan through aroma, calling on Master Perfumer Roja Dove's remarkable sensory knowledge and expert sense of smell to create the third unique expression in the series. Borne of two art forms, Edition No. 3 unites the worlds of whisky and aroma to reveal the complexities of single malt character and the power of the senses in creating and experiencing The Macallan.
Nose: Reminiscent of a fine fragrance with vanilla ice cream, fresh cut oak and delicate florals. Orange oil provides subtle grandeur while ginger, cinnamon and nutmeg flit in and out. Vanilla imparts sweetness with citrus fruits at the fore before allowing chocolate to come through. Burnished oak delivers a soft ending.
Taste: Sweet fruit, vanilla and rich fruit cake with hints of apricot, pear and crisp green apple. Ginger and cinnamon are balanced with a light resinous oak finale.
Finish: Long, sweet and fruity, leaving a lasting impression on the senses.
