Glenfiddich 29 Year Old Grand Yozakura Single Malt Scotch Whisky
Part of the Grand Series, Glenfiddich released a Limited Edition Single Malt: Grand Yozakura 29 Year Old. Yozakura, ‘cherry blossom viewing at night’ in Japanese, is the magical moment of fleeting beauty when Japanese cherry blossoms are admired and celebrated under moonlight. It is a fleeting phenomenon that lasts no more than two weeks.
Glenfiddich Grand Yozakura Single Malt has been matured for 29 years in oak casks and finished in exquisitely rare Awamori casks from Okinawa, previously used to mature the oldest style of distilled spirit in all of Japan.
“Awamori is much like whisky, with a diverse range of flavours. The extra finish in ex-Awamori Casks compliments the smooth Glenfiddich taste profile, elevating the finish and lifting the flavour to a new level, accentuating the mouthfeel characters and zingy herbal notes unlike any in the series, or anything I have tasted before.”
Brian Kinsman, Malt Master, Glenfiddich
Awamori is a Japanese rice spirit that is traditionally stored in clay pots and the liquid can spend several years in these vessels, developing a complexity of aromas, textures, and tastes. The technique for making Awamori is said to have remained unchanged for over 500 years. Indica Thai rice is soaked in water and sprinkled with black koji mold, which is then fermented with water and yeast, before undergoing a single distillation to complete the process. The introduction of oak to the Okinawa region responsible for Awamori is a relatively recent occurrence, one that emerged with the rising modern popularity of Japanese whisky. But even today, precious few producers are working with wood there.
“When the chance arose to acquire rare casks from there, we saw an opportunity to push the boundaries,” says Brian Kinsman, Glenfiddich’s Malt Master. “We always learn something new when we lead with innovation.”
A surge of ripe fruits and caramelized almonds fill the nose, before indulgent layers of toasted oak and creamy vanilla mingle with spice and sherbet, rippling on the tongue before a final crescendo of oak on the finish.
Glenfiddich Grand Yozakura is presented in a box showcasing an illustration of the distillery by Japanese artist June. The very timing of the release is intended to align with the height of Japan’s annual cherry blossom bloom. The bottle’s stopper features a Hanko stamp engraving, wrapped in a fabric capsule wearing a traditional poem on Sakura (cherry blossom).
Glenfiddich 29 Year Old Grand Yozakura is a testament to the brand's commitment to innovation and experimentation in whisky-making, resulting in a unique and exceptional whisky that is truly one-of-a-kind.
